How Covid-19 contact tracing can help beat the pandemic
Video The Guardian
7 May 2020
If the UK government wants
to start easing the country's
lockdown restrictions,
it needs to get contact tracing right.
But what does that
mean?
What would successful contact tracing
even look like?
Josh Toussaint-Strauss tries to find out
with a little help from Oxford Professor
and infectious
disease epidemiologist,
Christophe Fraser,
and the Guardian's UK technology editor,
Alex Hern

How The Coronavirus Attacks Your Lungs
Video Deep Look
NPR 5 May 2020
The new coronavirus packs a devastating punch.
It penetrates deep into your lungs,
causing our immune cells to go haywire
and damage tiny air sacs – the alveoli –
where oxygen normally flows into our blood.

Coronavirus tests: what they are and how they can help
Video The Guardian
20 April 2020
There's a lot of talk
about coronavirus testing at the moment,
but some people are getting confused
about what they actually
are.
How is the antibody test different to the PCR antigen test?
What do they do? And why are they important?
Josh Toussaint-Strauss speaks with Professor David Smith

Why coronavirus mortality rates
are so different
Video
The Guardian 9 April 2020
How can we understand the risk
of death from Covid-19
when there are so many numbers
flying around?
Well,
there are actually three
different types of fatality rate:
Case Fatality Rate (CFR),
Infection Fatality Rate (IFR),
and Crude Mortality Rate (CMR).
They are calculated in different
ways
and tell you different things.
When we know what each means
and
how they work,
we learn more about how new
infections
like the coronavirus affect us.

Tracing The Origins Of The Coronavirus
Video Short Wave
NPR 22 May 2020
As scientists race to keep up
with the spread of the new coronavirus,
one of the big mysteries surrounding the disease
is where this virus originated.
While the evidence overwhelming points to wildlife,
reporter Emily Kwong with NPR's Short Wave podcast
explains how tracing the origins of a disease like COVID-19
could take years.

The Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention
now says the
coronavirus
can be
spread through airborne particles
that can
linger in the air "for minutes or even hours"
— even among
people who are more than 6 feet apart.
The CDC
still says that SARS-COV-2,
the virus
that causes COVID-19,
is most
frequently spread among people
in close
contact with one another,
through
respiratory droplets produced
when an
infected person coughs,
sneezes or
talks.
But in new
guidance
published
Monday on its website,
the agency
also acknowledged
that under
certain circumstances,
people have
become infected
by smaller particles
that can
linger in the air
in enclosed
spaces
that are poorly ventilated.

880621610/a-users-guide-to-masks-what-s-best-at-protecting-others-and-yourself
surgical
masks
vs
respirator masks / N95 masks USA
N95 and
other respirator masks
are far
superior to surgical or cloth masks
in
protecting essential medical workers
against
the coronavirus.
(...)
N95
masks
offered
96 percent protection,
the
analysis found,
while
the figure for surgical masks
was 77
percent.
(...)
The new
analysis also suggests
that
covering the eyes
with
face shields, goggles and glasses
may
provide additional safeguards
for
health care workers and people
in the
community.
The
report is among the first to lay out
evidence
specific to coronaviruses,
rather
than extrapolating from data
on other
respiratory viruses.
The
coronavirus is thought to spread
primarily through droplets expelled
when an
infected person coughs, sneezes,
sings,
talks or even breathes.
Some
infections may also be caused
by
people touching a contaminated surface
and then
their mouth, nose or eyes.
Study
after study has indicated
that the
virus can also spread via tiny droplets
less
than 5 microns, called aerosols.
(A
micron equals one millionth of a meter.)
But the
W.H.O. has so far
not
acknowledged this risk
and has
not backed
the
universal use of masks.
“There’s
this fear around saying airborne
— but
that’s what it is,” Dr. MacIntyre said.
A recent
review in the journal Science
took
direct aim
at the
W.H.O.’s reluctance on this issue,
saying
the organization’s recommendations
for
physical distancing and hand washing
were
based on studies “carried out in the 1930s.”
The
C.D.C. did not recommend masks
till
April 3.
Even
now, its guidance says surgical masks
offer
enough protection for health care workers
unless
they are involved
in
procedures that produce aerosols.
The
C.D.C. initially
recommended N95 masks
for all
health care personnel.
Dr.
MacIntyre said the agency
later
downgraded its recommendations
because
of a shortage of N95 masks
and
personal protective equipment.
“Guidelines should be based on evidence,
not on
supplies,” she said.
“It’s
like telling an army,
‘Oh
sorry, we’ve run out of guns,
just
take these bows and arrows
and face
the enemy.’”
She
noted that N95 masks
were
inexpensive to produce
and that
other countries,
including Australia,
had
repurposed
existing
manufacturing facilities
to make
the masks.
