Women's Voluntary Services - in pictures    1938-1941

Station canteen,

Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, 20 November 1941

Original extract:

The changeover to the new canteen …

was achieved in triumph

without closing the old one for a single day.

The helpers were for a few days deafened

and greatly impeded in their work

by the hammering, sawing

and all the other activities

of a large body of workmen …

The customers are now able to sit in comfort at tables

instead of at a shelf round the wall.
