Why we are all attracted to conspiracy theories

Video    G    10 March 2021

Belief in conspiracy theories is far more widespread

than the stereotypes that dominate pop culture.

Recently, QAnon, Covid-19 and 5G theories

have gained traction and criticism

while less controversial conspiracies

like the faked moon landing

have persisted for decades.

We all share hardwired evolutionary traits

that make us vulnerable to them,

from the way we assign truth to new information

to our tendency to find patterns in unrelated phenomena.

But if we're all potentially susceptible to conspiracy theories,

how can we manage these cognitive shortcuts?

conspiracist logic        USA

Conspiracist logic often functions

as an inversion of the cliche that 'seeing is believing,'

according to Jenny Rice,

a professor of rhetoric at the University of Kentucky,

who has researched conspiracy theorist communities

devoted to the 9/11 attacks.

"You can only believe the things that you can't see,"

she explained.

"The things that we are shown

are deliberately produced and delivered to us

and therefore are not trustworthy."

What Can You Do About QAnon?

Video    NYT Opinion    NYT    27 October 2020

A global cabal of celebrity pedophiles?

Trafficked children being sold online

through a furniture website?

And Donald Trump about to rescue us from it all?

These QAnon conspiracy theories are so outlandish

— not to mention demonstrably untrue —

it feels like the natural response …

is laughter and mockery.

But according to documentary filmmaker Kirby Ferguson,

that’s the opposite of what you should do.

Dunking on fools may feel good,

but humiliating QAnoners

risks driving them further down the rabbit hole.

And you should care

because you might have a QAnon believer

among your friends or family

— and on Nov. 3,

it’s possible several will be elected to Congress.

Q is not going anywhere soon.

So what can you do?

Jacob Chansley,

the self-styled "QAnon shaman"

who became one of the faces

of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol

after storming the building

in a fur headdress with horns,

has been sentenced

to nearly three and a half years in prison

for his role in the riot.

Photographs of a bare-chested Chansley

carrying a bullhorn and a spear

adorned with the American flag

while howling in halls of the Capitol

became some of the iconic images

of that violent, chaotic day.
