Chet Baker lost in memory

‘I used to live above Ronnie Scott’s.

Chet Baker played beautifully,

considering he’d lost his teeth in the gutter’

Chesney Henry "Chet" Baker Jr.    1929-1988

As much as any musician of his generation,

Baker epitomized a romantic coolness

whose mystique involved

an alluring strain of danger.

Handsome and talented

but imperiously self-destructive,

the man who has been called

''the James Dean of jazz''

was a connoisseur of fast cars,

women and drugs.

Addicted to heroin

for most of his adult life,

he died (...) at 58

after a fall from a hotel window

in Amsterdam.
