‘Pictures on the Radio’: Celebrating David Gilkey’s Work

video    NPR extra    27 January 2021

On Jan. 26,

NPR and Politics and Prose Bookstore held a virtual event

to celebrate renowned conflict photojournalist David Gilkey,

whose work is compiled in ‘Pictures on the Radio’

(powerHouse Books, 2021).

Gilkey helped bring vivid life to big and small stories with global impact,

chronicling pain and beauty in war and conflict.

He was killed by the Taliban while on assignment in 2016.

At this virtual event,

NPR’s Renee Montagne, who traveled extensively with Gilkey,

interviewed Quil Lawrence and Chip Somodevilla,

who edited ‘Pictures on the Radio.’

They shared memories,

reflected on Gilkey’s photographs and answered questions

from David’s many friends and admirers who were in the audience.

The pay is generous -- $1,000 a month.

The risks are enormous.

They collect the body of an Ebola victim,

avoiding any contact that could infect them.

They wear safety garb. And they pray.
