Eskimo Belle by HG Kaiser.

Intimate portraits of Indigenous Alaskans – in pictures

Around 1900, several photographers,

including Missouri-born Beverly Bennett Dobbs

and two European emigrants to the US,

HG Kaiser and Albert F Johnson,

followed a gold rush to Nome, Alaska.

Among the clients they ushered into their portrait studios

were a number of Indigenous Alaskans,

whose striking pictures were later collected

by the British film producer Michael G Wilson.

“The portraits are remarkable for their intimacy,”

says Richard Ovenden, head of the Bodleian Library in Oxford,

which has recently acquired Wilson’s collection of photographs.

Little is known about the subjects

but Ovenden values the portraits

as a record of a “moment of encounter and exchange”

between “the international community of prospectors [and]

the Inuit communities who had lived in peace

for thousands of years”.

Video        Op-Docs        The New York Times        15 April 2018

This week we bring you

“A Conversation With Native Americans on Race,”

the latest installment in our wide-ranging

“Conversation on Race” series.

Directed by Michèle Stephenson and Brian Young,

the film grapples

with the racist contradictions of a country that, many feel,

would prefer it if Native Americans didn’t exist.

Hawaiians, Hawaiian people > native rights

Haunani-Kay Trask    1949-2021

Haunani-Kay Trask,

a scholar, poet

and champion of sovereignty

for the Hawaiian people

who decried

what she called the colonization

and despoliation of her native land

(...)

In her best-known book,

“Notes From a Native Daughter:

Colonialism and Sovereignty in Hawaii” (1993),

Dr. Trask called Hawaii

“once the most fragile

and precious of sacred places,

now transformed

by the American behemoth

into a dying land.”

“Only a whispering spirit remains,”

she wrote.

Dr. Trask was not afraid to make waves

as a leader of what became known

as the Hawaiian Sovereignty movement.

She received national attention in 1990

for remarks directed

at an undergraduate student

at the University of Hawaii,

where she was a professor

of Hawaiian Studies.

The student,

in a letter to the school newspaper,

accused Native Hawaiians

of holding racist attitudes

toward white people on the island.

Native American tribes > casino business

Nearly half of all Native American tribes across the country

are benefiting from casinos and other gaming revenues.

For most,

it's their largest source of income.

But growing threats to that revenue

due to competition from non-Indian gaming

are forcing many tribes

to look for other investment opportunities.

Native American human remains

As the United States

pushed Native Americans from their lands

to make way for westward expansion

throughout the 1800s,

museums and the federal government

encouraged the looting of Indigenous remains,

funerary objects and cultural items.

Many of the institutions continue to hold these today

— and in some cases resist their return

despite the 1990 passage

of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.

“We never ceded or relinquished our dead.

They were stolen,”

James Riding In,

then an Arizona State University professor who is Pawnee,

said of the unreturned remains.

ProPublica this year

is investigating the failure of NAGPRA

to bring about the expeditious return of human remains

by federally funded universities and museums.

Our reporting, in partnership with NBC News,

has found that a small group of institutions

and government bodies

has played an outsized role in the law’s failure.

For 1,000 years, long before Columbus,

the Anasazi Indians were lords

of what's now the American Southwest.

Their civilization was as complex and sophisticated

as that of the Mayans.

Then, apparently without warning,

the Anasazi all but disappeared.

Commentator Craig Childs

is author of House of Rain

a new book that tries to solve that ancient mystery.

A visit to an Anasazi site in southeastern Utah

offers clues.
