A REUTERS SPECIAL REPORT

Sudanese women describe being gang-raped

in ethnically targeted attacks by Arab forces

Reuters

Rape is widespread amid the war in Sudan

Young women from the ethnic-African Masalit tribe say

they were sexually assaulted at gunpoint

by RSF paramilitary and Arab militia forces

during attacks on the city of El Geneina in West Darfur.

‘For three days, they were raping me,’

one teenager said.

Sudan Deposed a Dictator, but Protests Won't Stop. Here's Why

Video        Dispatches        The New York Times        2 May 2019

Even after forcing out president Omar al-Bashir,

who ruled Sudan for 30 years,

thousands of pro-democracy protesters

are still out on the streets.

Why? Because the country’s military generals

have taken power into their hands.

Sudan > western Darfur region >

The Darfur genocide / genocidal violence        FR, UK / USA

(....) in 2003, rebels in Darfur,

a poor, remote region in western Sudan

rose up against the authoritarian rule

of President Omar al-Bashir.

Bashir dispatched his security forces,

which ruthlessly crushed the rebellion

over the next several years.

Darfur remains a fragile,

deeply scarred region to this day.

An estimated 300,000 people were killed,

many of them civilians,

and some 2 million people

were driven from their homes.

Former U.S. president George W. Bush

and other international leaders

declared Sudanese military actions in Darfur

a genocide.

The International Criminal Court subsequently

charged Bashir and four of his allies

with genocide and crimes against humanity.

Burhan and Hemedti,

have not been charged,

though their deep involvement in Darfur

is beyond dispute, said DeWaal,

who has worked in Sudan

and followed it closely for nearly 40 years.

"Both Burhan and Hamedti

were part of the counterinsurgency,

and I'm sure in one way or another

they could have been charged

by the prosecutor

of the International Criminal Court.

He didn't make it a priority to go after

either of them for reasons I don't know,"

said DeWaal, who's written extensively

on Sudan.

If It Were My Home

The headlines tell a lot about the crisis in Yemen:

internal strife,

evacuations of international aid workers,

Saudi Arabian airstrikes.

But you may have one very basic question

that you can't easily find an answer for:

How big is Yemen, anyway?

You can look at maps and check out Wikipedia

but wouldn't it be great

to just to slap an outline of Yemen

on top of a map of the United States

to get a sense of its size?

IfItWereMyHome.com

lets you do just that.
