After Watching 10 Migrants Die at Sea, He Now Pleads: ‘Stay’

Witness to a tragedy on a boat to Spain,

Moustapha Diouf has made it his mission

to persuade young people not to emigrate from Senegal,

but even he concedes that it’s getting harder to make his case.

« L’échappée », la nouvelle émission d’Edwy Plenel

video    Mediapart    22 November 2024

Deux citations introduisent Universaliser (Albin Michel),

le nouvel essai de Souleymane Bachir Diagne.

L’une de Léopold Sédar Senghor :

« Mesurer l’orgueil d’être différent au bonheur d’être ensemble » ;

l’autre de Jean Jaurès :

« Vers ce grand but d’humanité,

The veiled rapper breaking taboos for women in Senegal

Video        The Guardian        31 December 2019

Mina La Voilée is a female rapper from Parcelles, Dakar,

who is breaking taboos by rapping about women's rights.

As a woman who chooses to wear a veil,

she explains how criticism from industry professionals

who told her "the veil and hip hop don't flow together"

drove her to succeed,

and inspired her to tackle

other controversial societal issues in her lyrics

such as child marriage, rape and infanticide.

She performs both as a solo artist

and as part of an all-female rap movement,

Genji Hip Hop, who use their music to fight

cultural stereotypes and gender violence

Atlantic crossing

Record numbers attempted

the perilous Atlantic crossing last year (2023)

after other routes to Europe

across the Sahara Desert and Mediterranean Sea

became more heavily policed.

Over 39,900 people reached

the Canary Islands from West Africa,

an all-time high,

according to Spain’s interior ministry.

Most were from Senegal

or neighbouring Gambia.

But rickety boats,

motor failures and bad weather

are just a few of the dangers

that too often lead to disaster.

At least 6,007 people are believed

to have died on this route in 2023,

according to migrant rights group Caminando Fronteras

(Walking Borders).

Others likely left and were lost without trace.

If It Were My Home

The headlines tell a lot

about the crisis in Yemen:

internal strife,

evacuations of international aid workers,

Saudi Arabian airstrikes.

But you may have one very basic question

that you can't easily find an answer for:

How big is Yemen, anyway?

You can look at maps

and check out Wikipedia

but wouldn't it be great

to just to slap an outline of Yemen

on top of a map of the United States

to get a sense of its size?

IfItWereMyHome.com

lets you do just that.
