When Mother's Day Means a Trip to Prison

Videos    Op-Docs    NYT    18 March  2018

Today,

Op-Docs brings you Elizabeth Lo’s “Mother’s Day,”

which follows some children in California

on an annual overnight bus program

that brings them to visit their incarcerated parents.

The film cuts straight to the emotional core of a huge topic,

as did Lo’s previous Op-Doc, the acclaimed “Hotel 22,”

which tells the story of a very different kind of bus trip.

The US prison system is broken.

So why is the UK imitating it? Eric Schlosser

Video    Comment is Free    Guardian    14 January 2015

America now has the biggest prison population in the world.

The majority of those behind bars are non-violent offenders,

two thirds are African American or Latino.

It is a failing system.

The UK should pay attention,

argues investigative journalist and author Eric Schlosser,

because it's the only country in the western world

that's imitating American correctional practices.

Why do prisons matter?

Because most prisoners will one day walk free

and what you do to them behind bars has consequences.

Eric's latest book, Command & Control:

Nuclear Weapons and the Illusion of Safety,

is out now.

His next book will be on the American prison system.
