Much of Clement’s previous work seems unrooted from time.

However, in 1991,

Belfast had seen years of conflict in the Troubles

and the IRA ceasefire of 1994 was some time off

The Danish photographer revisited his archives

to find dozens of previously unpublished images taken in the early 1990s

as he meandered through the city.

His new photobook is a mystical and melancholy time capsule

Clement says:

‘All my books are formed by two things.

Partly the memory, partly the loss.

The photo in a way is connected to the loss in that it has been.

The moment you take the picture it has been.

Time proceeds and the picture remains.

It is both painful and unnerving,

but also very beautiful’

‘Photography is a difficult process

– exactly because you don’t just snap pictures.

You’ve got experience and consciousness.

Your goal is to couple your experience and your consciousness

with what you see.

You try to reveal things in your surroundings that match who you are.

Human beings hold so infinitely much and only a little is visible.

But you can get a strong sense of a person

and when you get this sense of a person,

perhaps by photographing him you reveal something of what you sense

but which in reality was not visible.

That’s fantastic’

In 1991,

on a visit to Ireland and Northern Ireland,

Krass Clement shot his landmark book, Drum,

in just one evening in an Irish pub,

using three and a half rolls of film.

More than 30 years later

Clement has revisited his archive

and photographs he made in the same period.

His new book, Belfast,

features 114 previously unpublished images taken

as he moved through the city

as an outsider observing its people, landscape and rhythm,

and is available from RRB Photobooks
