Un exemplaire de la première édition reliée

de 36 pièces de William Shakespeare (1564-1616)

est exposé à la maison d'enchères Sotheby's

au centre de Londres jeudi.

 

L'ouvrage,

composé en 1623 par des amis du dramaturge anglais

et imprimé à environ 750 exemplaires dont le tiers a survécu,

va être mis aux enchères le 13 juillet à Londres,

où il pourrait atteindre de 2,5 à 3,5 millions de livres (3,6 à 5,4 M EUR).

 

La moitié des pièces de William Shakespeare contenues

dans cet in-folio étaient alors imprimées pour la première fois

- notamment Macbeth, La Tempête et Comme il vous plaira.

 

Selon un porte-parole de Sotheby's,

«des exemplaires relativement complets de ce livre

n'apparaissent que très rarement sur le marché.

 

Cette vente sera véritablement

un événement exceptionnel»

 

Le livre est mis sur le marché

par les gérants de la librairie du Dr Williams à Londres,

une librairie théologique établie au début du XVIIIème siècle.

 

L'exemplaire, relié en veau brun

et contenant les annotations de ses premiers lecteurs,

est la propriété de cette librairie depuis 1716.
