Rosina Ruth Park    New Zealand    1917-2010

Her novel of the Sydney slums,

“The Harp in the South,”

shocked Australians in the 1940s

but did not prevent her

from becoming one of the country’s

most revered writers

F. Gwynplaine MacIntyre    UK / USA ?    1948-2010

F. GWYNPLAINE MacINTYRE

lived in two dimensions.

The F stood for Fergus.

That was how neighbors

in his working-class neighborhood

in deep Brooklyn knew him:

a bearish pariah holed up

in a fetid apartment stuffed

with a lifetime of newspapers,

books, belongings

and all sorts of trash,

who worked nights

as a printer in Manhattan

and ranted

about his horrid childhood.

The F also stood for Froggy.

That’s what fans

in the rabid science-fiction world

on the Internet called him:

a witty and eloquent man prone

to using obscure words

and coining new ones,

who published numerous books,

articles and short stories

to great acclaim

and spun fantastic tales

about his travels.

Dick Francis

by Tom Jenkins

Comment

Whip hand

After Dick Francis took a tumble

in the final seconds of the Grand National in 1956

he stopped racing and became a writer.

Now, after a six-year break, he's writing again.

Norman Mailer    USA    1923-2007

(born Nachem Malech Mailer)

Norman Mailer

– when not boozily brawling,

dosing himself with hallucinogenic drugs

and serially fornicating –

was a man with a sacred mission.

He regarded himself as a prophet,

bringing bad news to a society

that had settled

into consumerist complacency

during the 1950s.

Americans believe

that they live in God’s own country;

Mailer alerted them

to “the possible existence of Satan”,

who might be residing next door

and quietly assembling a private arsenal

for use on Judgment Day.

Although Mailer looked up

at the sky with “religious awe”,

what he saw there

was a mushroom-shaped cloud

that he called “the last deity”.

Humanity, he declared,

was reeling towards self-destruction.

Hunter S. Thompson on Outlaws

Video        Blank on Blank    PBS Digital Studios

“I keep my mouth shut now.

I’ve turned into a professional coward.”

- Hunter S. Thompson in 1967

As told to Studs Terkel ( http://studsterkel.org )

Hear more from this rare interview:

http://blankonblank.org/hunter-thompson

In the 1960s,

Hunter S. Thompson spent more than a year

living and drinking with members of the Hell’s Angels motorcycle club,

riding up and down the California coast.

What he saw alongside this group of renegades on Harleys,

these hairy outlaws who rampaged

and faced charges of attempted murder, assault and battery,

and destruction of property along the way

--all of this became the heart of Thompson’s first book:

Hell’s Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga.

Shortly after the book came out,

Thompson sat down for a radio interview

with the one and only Studs Terkel.
